Military, Police & USFK on Extra Alert

The Military, Police and United States Forces in Korea were placed on full alert Sunday in preparation for the visit of President George W. Bush commencing February 19. Both Korean and US forces are especially concentrating on monitoring Dorasan Station near the demilitarized zone which Presidents Kim Dae-jung and Bush will visit. They are using U2 over-flights, satellites, UAVs and radar to ensure the complete security for the two leaders. In addition the United States Air Force has deployed an E3 AWACS aircraft.

A military source said that security condition A was the norm for visiting foreign leaders, but that the level had been considerably enhanced for Bush's trip.

The National Police Agency has deployed 1,000 additional officers around the US embassy and residences in Seoul, and will erect barriers to prevent car bombs. It has denied seven out of 27 applications for demonstrations including one termed "anti war."
