Korea to Freeze Terrorist Assets

In line with Seoul's support for anti-terrorism, the government announced Monday that it will be freezing assets believed to be linked to both the Taliban and Osama bin Laden. The Ministry of Finance and Economy says it has launched investigations into 162 individuals and seven organizations, suspected of having links with terrorist groups. At the same time these parties have been blocked from making financial transactions in Korea.

Meanwhile, a broader investigation is set to get underway on financial institutions, by the government's watchdog Financial Supervisory Service, to uncover any assets linked to terrorism. The government said it will take similar steps already used by countries like the U.S., Britain and Japan to choke off the financial lifeline of terrorist networks.
