The national police sent a list of 141 foreigners to be deported on Friday. They entered
Korea on a tourist visa and taught English in companies and foreign language institutes
without a license. The police also arrested people from five unlicensed agencies under the
suspicion of withholding introduction fees and salaries from teachers. Another agency was
indicted without custody, and a warrant was released for an individual from another agency
currently at large. The police said it was confirmed that a total of 1,019 foreigners received
jobs through such agencies, and a total of 398 changed their visas from tourist to E2, a legal
status for foreign workers. However, the police are cross-referencing with interpol to
determine if any school records among the 398 have been falsified, and if so they will also be
deported.
One of the agencies gave jobs to 67 foreigners who entered with tourist visas and took
800,000-1,200,000 per person as introduction fees, totaling 120,000,000 won in illegal fees.
Seven unlicensed agencies were found to have gained illegal profit total 2.8 billion won.
