Sales of lottery surpassed W5 trillion last year for the first time as business after business went bust due to lockdown and people turned to Lady Luck instead (US$1=W1,191).

The Finance Ministry said W5.14 trillion worth of lottery tickets were sold last year, up 8.4 percent from a year earlier and the most since the lottery started in 2004.

Ticket sales have been setting new records every year since 2008.

The ministry attributed last year's sales jump to the coronavirus pandemic as other gambling businesses like horse and bike racing reduced operations.

In a poll of 1,020 men and women last year, 62.8 percent of respondents said they had bought lottery tickets more than once a year. Those in their 40s topped the list with 74.2 percent, followed by those in their 50s (69.7 percent), those in their 30s (66.7 percent), those in their 20s (54.1 percent), and over-60s (54 percent).
