Exports of kimchi hit an all-time high last year for the second straight year due to growing demand for healthier foods amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The Korea Customs Service said Monday that outbound shipments of kimchi reached US$160 million last year, up 10.7 percent on-year. The previous record was $145 million.

The biggest importer was Japan with $80.1 million, followed by the U.S. ($28.3 million), Hong Kong ($7.7 million) and Taiwan ($6.9 million).

Meanwhile, imports of kimchi dropped by 7.7 percent to $140.7 million following a scandal last March involving a naked man filmed pickling kimchi in a factory in China. This resulted in a trade surplus of $19.1 million. The last kimchi trade surplus was recorded in 2009 amid a drastic decrease in imports in the aftermath of the global financial crisis.
