Many people take a battery of health supplements such as vitamins, amino acids, red ginseng, calcium and Omega-3 fatty acids, but a balanced diet is in fact a much better source of these essential nutrients.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology offers a set of guidelines for longevity and advises people to eat portions of 10 kinds of food every day -- fish, butter, lean meat, dairy products, green vegetables, seafood, starchy tubers like potatoes, eggs, beans and fruit.
As people age, they tend to prefer familiar comfort foods so their diet narrows. The institute studied the eating habits of elderly people and found that they only consumed only four to six different types of food a day, mainly rice and soup.
But the institute advises people to consume at least eight types and stresses that health supplements are only necessary when people are underweight or eat irregularly.
Entrenched bad eating habits can decrease the cognitive powers of elderly people and increase the risk of dementia, so a wide variety of nutrients is essential.
Health specialists advise elderly people be more adventurous, try different types of food and go to restaurants serving foods they have not tried before.
