Single-use plastic cups will be banned for dine-in customers at coffee shops again from April.
The ban was first imposed in August 2018, but the government temporarily allowed their use when the coronavirus pandemic broke out in early 2020 to prevent the spread of the virus.
The Ministry of Environment said Thursday the ban is being reimposed to tackle the increasing volume of plastic waste amid the pandemic. The amount of plastic waste jumped 19 percent last year. Violators could face fines of up to about W2 million for the first offense, with further violations resulting in larger fines (US$1=W1,203).
The use of other plastic items, and of paper cups at other types of businesses, will also be limited from November.
