A surge in coronavirus infections across the country and the Omicron panic have prompted local governments to cancel their popular New Year's festivities.
The southeastern port city of Ulsan, which is home to Ganjeolgot Cape where tens of thousands gather from all over the country to witness the first sunrise of the year, canceled the event. The county had planned to allow only 99 people to gather at the cape this time but finally decided to cancel the event altogether.
The annual sunrise event at Homigot Cape in the southeastern port city of Pohang has also been canceled. A Pohang city official said, "We decided to cancel the event for the second straight year." The observation decks will be closed from Dec. 31 until Jan. 1, and instead, Pohang city will livestream the first sunrise of 2022 on YouTube.
Geoje city in South Gyeongsang Province also canceled its popular fireworks extravaganza on New Year's Eve.
