Books about business and personal finance topped sales at Korea's biggest bookstore Kyobo Book Centre for the first time since it opened in 1980.

On Kyobo's annual bestseller list Monday, business books accounted for 8.5 percent of sales. Even last year they still ranked third in 2020 after children's books and literature.

The trend is attributed to growing interest among younger readers in getting rich and gaining financial freedom from their corporate employers.

Sales of books on cryptocurrencies increased more than sixfold.

"Among people who bought books on personal finance, 36 percent were in their 30s, 27 percent in their 40s and 16.5 percent in their 20s," the bookstore said in a press release. "This was due to younger readers who dream of getting rich."
