Korea is the third biggest plastic polluter in the world, according to a report by the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine on Wednesday.
The report said every person in Korea generated a staggering 88 kg of plastic waste in 2016. The U.S. was the leading polluter with 130 kg, followed by the U.K. with 99 kg.
Germany generated 81 kg per person, Japan 38 kg and China just 16 kg.
Plastic waste worldwide amounted to 381 million tons in 2015, and much of it went into the oceans, poisoning ecosystems and ending up in the human food chain when it was eaten by fish.
"An estimated 8 million metric tons… of plastic waste enters the world's ocean each year -- the equivalent of dumping a garbage truck of plastic waste into the ocean every minute. Plastic waste is now found in almost every marine habitat," the report said.
If the current trend continues, the amount that goes into the ocean could leap to 53 million tons a year by 2030.
