The southern port city of Busan will host the World Team Table Tennis Championships in 2024.

The International Table Tennis Federation on Wednesday announced Busan as the host of the world championships during its annual general meeting in Houston, Texas. Busan defeated Buenos Aires, Argentina 97-46 in its bid.

Busan was originally scheduled to hold the event last year, but it was canceled once and for all after three postponements due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Korea Table Tennis Association vied to host the 2024 event with the support of the city government and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism after launching another bid in May last year.

The association said, "We made all the preparations for the competition in 2020, but it was so unfortunate that the event was canceled due to the pandemic."

"We are happy that we can eventually make it happen in 2024."

The World Table Tennis Championships is an international competition with around 2,000 participants from 100 countries. It features individual events in odd-numbered years and team events in even-numbered years.
