House Parties Become Popular Again

House parties are becoming popular again after a period when they seemed little more than a nuisance, because since the coronavirus pandemic started socializing in bars and restaurant has become more difficult.

Recently, searches for "house party" and "party gifts" have been trending on Instagram.

Koh Min-ji, a 31-year-old office worker, said, "There is a strong perception nowadays that homes are the safest places in the pandemic. We can sing with a karaoke app, play computer games and show off our pets to each other," as the pandemic has made more home entertainments readily available.

Young people also enjoy celebrating small life changes like new curtains and pets, so they invite their friends home more often. The omnipresence of home deliveries has eased the burden on the hosts to prepare their own food.

One 29-year-old office worker in Seoul said, "I can order all kinds of food from pizza and sweet-and-sour pork to steamed kimchi. Another advantage of house parties is that we don't have to worry about other people."

The Korea Health Promotion Institute surveyed 2,695 college students earlier this month and found that 59.5 percent said their favorite places to drink had changed since the pandemic started -- 47.6 percent favored their own homes and 32 percent the homes of friends.
