Scores of people gathered in a conference center in Tokyo's Shinagawa district on Sunday afternoon to take part in a tasting of Asiana Airlines' inflight meals.

Demand was a whopping 20 times the number of tickets available for the event organized by the airline and the Korea Tourism Organization.

"I used to travel to Korea every two or three months but couldn't for the last two years," said one of the guests, Mami Kimura. "It's been so long since I tried gochujang (red chili paste) and I feel a little bit like I'm in Korea."

The event was part of the Korean tour festival organized by KTO. Travel-deprived guests were given boarding tickets and escorted to their seats, while Asiana flight attendants were there to serve the meals.

Chung Jin-soo of the KTO's Tokyo office said, "Japan is home to many fans of Korea who visit several times a year, and demand for travel to Korea, which has been suppressed by the coronavirus pandemic, is boiling over."

Most of the people who applied for tickets were millennials and generation Z who enjoy Korean culture and travel, according to the KTO, and are untroubled by the countries' historic enmity.
