Hyundai has named its U.S.-based urban air mobility subsidiary Supernal.

The automaker said Tuesday it expects to commercialize flying cars as early as 2028. Established last year in Washington D.C., the subsidiary was tentatively called Genesis Air Mobility before.

Supernal will open a research and development center in California next year and develop an electric flying car for major cities such as New York and San Francisco by 2028.

In the next decade, it aims to introduce "regional air mobility," a long-distance service between cities in the U.S.

Supernal has partnered with the city of Los Angeles since last year and developed a roadmap for cooperation in future mobility.

"Supernal will offer high-quality products at affordable prices using Hyundai's technology and manufacturing capacity," said Supernal CEO Shin Jai-won.
