Korea is likely to export more of the country's trademark kimchi than it imports for the first time in 12 years.

Despite being the origin of the dish, Korea has been importing more kimchi from China than it exports. But this year imports from China have shrunk, partly due to a health and hygiene scare.

According to the Korea Customs Service on Tuesday, kimchi exports reached US$111.46 million as of August, up 13.8 percent on-year, but imports amounted to only $86.1 million, down 9.7 percent, resulting in a trade surplus of $25.36 million.

The last kimchi trade surplus was recorded in 2009 because of a drastic decrease in imports in the aftermath of the global financial crisis.

But the KCS said this year exports increased substantially thanks to the global popularity of all things Korean.
