The number of people signing up to donate organs has dropped 25 percent during the coronavirus pandemic.
According to data obtained from Korea Organ Donation Agency, in 2020 some 67,160 people pledged to donate their organs after death, down 25.7 percent from the previous year. It is the first time in a decade the number has dropped below 70,000.
"Organ donations are often encouraged at hospitals. But as the number of people who visited hospitals decreased due to the pandemic, fewer people made such pledges," a KODA staffer said.
However, the number of patients waiting for organ transplants stood at 35,852 last year, up 8.7 percent from 32,990 in 2019.
