Korea Picks Offensive Heavyweights for Key World Cup Qualifier Against Syria

    Korea faces Syria in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province on Thursday evening in its third match of the final round of Asian qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

    It is a pivotal home game for Korea before the players head to Tehran to play Iran on Oct. 12.

    Korea, ranked 36th in the world, has one win and one draw from its first two matches in the round and now stands in second place among six teams in its group. It tied with Iraq 0-0 and beat Lebanon 1-0 last month.

    Syria, ranked 81st in the world, is in fourth place after one draw and one loss.

    National team manager Paulo Bento will start Son Heung-min of Tottenham Hotspur, Hwang Ui-jo of FC Girondins de Bordeaux and Hwang Hee-chan of Wolverhampton Wanderers on the offensive front.
