Overseas sales of Nongshim's spicy Shin Ramyeon instant noodles surpassed domestic sales this year for the first time since the product hit stores in 1986, the food maker said Tuesday.
Sales of Shin Ramyeon totaled W690 billion from January to September, and 53.6 percent of that was generated abroad (US$1=W1,187).
Nongshim has focused on boosting overseas sales since the Korean market became saturated, and global lockdown meant more people warmed up pot noodles at home. The company also got a boost when its other brands Chapagetti and Neoguri were featured in the Oscar-winning film "Parasite."
At this rate Nongshim expects overseas revenues of Shin Ramyeon to exceed W500 billion this year, resulting in overall sales of W930 billion.
A Nongshim staffer said cumulative sales of Shin Ramyeon reached W15 trillion as of the end of September, which unprecedented for a single Korean food product.
