Omais, this year's 12th typhoon, will make a landfall at Yeosu, South Jeolla Province on the southwest coast on Monday night, the Korea Meteorological Administration said Sunday.
It will be the first typhoon to hit the Korean Peninsula directly this year.
More than 70 mm of rain per hour are expected in southern parts until Tuesday, with strong winds blowing at a speed of up to 30 m/s.
Omais, which formed in the Philippine Sea last Friday, had been expected to die before it approached Korea but gained strength on the way instead.
It is expected to pass Jeju Island on Monday afternoon and reach Yeosu around 9 p.m.
It is a small typhoon with the radius of maximum wind speeds of 130 km.
Omais will dwindle to an extratropical cyclone as it passes inland areas of North Gyeongsang Province and move to the East Sea on Tuesday, the KMA predicted.
