More than 50,000 jobs were lost in the hospitality industry last month as small businesses closed down due to the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the Ministry of Employment and Labor on Thursday, some 51,000 workers at restaurants and accommodation facilities lost their jobs.

Temping companies and travel agencies also shed 17,000 jobs, and wedding halls and beauty shops 9,000.

But 99,000 jobs were created mostly in the public sector such as health and welfare.

The outlook for July is even bleaker after the government tightened lockdown across the country.
