Korea Sets up Own Olympic Canteen

The Korean Olympic team has set up its own canteen in a hotel in Chiba Prefecture, a 15-minute drive from the Olympic village. The plan is to serve a total of 8,500 meals to the Korean delegation.

Some Japanese people have taken offense, and Masahisa Sato of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party made hay by fulminating, "Getting their meal separately is an act of trampling on the hearts of the people of Fukushima."

The implication is that Koreans are refusing to touch irradiated food that might come from Fukushima, which suffered a devastating nuclear accident in 2011. But Korea says it decided to set up its own canteen for fear of the spread of coronavirus.

However, Japan's political class has not reacted to news that the U.S. Olympic team is doing the same.

According to USA Today on Wednesday, the American canteen has been set up at the Okura Sports Park near the Olympic village and "will serve as a local training hub around the games."

The U.S. sent 32.7 tons worth of food and drinks to Tokyo that will be turned into 7,000 meals during the Olympics in the form of packed lunches or buffets, with the emphasis on lean protein.
