The number of sailors from the Navy's Cheonghae anti-piracy unit who were infected with coronavirus on their ship in African waters has increased to 270, the Defense Ministry said Wednesday.

All 301 crew from the ship were airlifted home the previous day and tested again.

President Moon Jae-in made no apology for the mass infections but appeared to blame the military in a meeting with key officials on Tuesday.

In a bizarre misdirection amid mounting public anger over the mass infections and the slow and bungled process of vaccination here, Moon instead named boy band Bangtan Boys, also known as BTS his special envoys to promote Korea to "future generations."

"BTS will deliver a message of consolation and hope to young people around the world at major international conferences, including the UN General Assembly to be held in New York in September," Cheong Wa Dae spokeswoman Park Kyung-mee said.
