The government said Friday it will tighten lockdown in the greater Seoul area even further as daily coronavirus infections reached a new record of 1,316 cases.

Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum said at a meeting that the new rules will go into effect for two weeks next Monday.

Gatherings of more than four people by day and two people after 6 p.m. will be banned.

All bars, pubs and nightclubs will be forced to close while restaurants, coffee shops and gyms must shut at 10 p.m.

There will be no exception even for fully vaccinated people. The government's dismal failure to secure ample vaccines in time means the situation is unlikely to improve for weeks and months to come.
