Nine people were killed and eight others injured when a five-story building suddenly collapsed on a bus arriving on the roadside during demolition in a redevelopment area in Gwangju on Wednesday afternoon.

The bus was buried and severely crushed under the rubble, and firefighters searched for more casualties overnight but found none.

The building collapsed towards a road in Hak-dong around 4:20 p.m. when the bus was slowing down to stop at a bus stop on the side of a six-lane road in front of the redevelopment area.

Firefighters rescued eight passengers but found the others dead in the crushed bus. Nine passengers were found dead -- a woman in her 70s, four women and a man in their 60s, a woman in her 30s, another woman in her 40s, and a teenage boy.

Construction workers had cleaned up the area around the building the previous day and started demolition by dismantling the top floor using an excavator. But then they noticed that the entire structure was about to collapse and ran into the street.

The demolition contractor said, "All workers escaped when they heard a strange noise from the building." But they did not immediately secure the entire area or stop road traffic.

    Police are investigating.
