Some 43,800 Koreans owned more than W1 billion worth of stocks last year, up from just 25,200 in the year before, the Korea Securities Depository said Sunday (US$1=W1,121).

That accounts for 0.48 percent of all stockholders in the country, up from 0.41 percent in 2019.

A stock market boom last year sent the number of retail investors soaring from 6.14 million to 9.14 million over the same period.

The total value of stock billionaires' shares reached W326.8 trillion, taking up 49.4 percent of total stocks held by retail investors.

That means the top 0.5 percent of stockholders account for half the total stock value.

Some 2,800 people or 0.03 percent of all stockholders own more than W10 billion worth of stocks, up from 2,200 in 2019.
