President Moon Jae-in's approval rating has sunk to a new record-low 34 percent while the gap in support for the ruling and opposition parties had narrowed to the thinnest margin since the ouster of President Park Geun-hye in 2016.

The Gallup Korea poll of 1,000 adults last week suggests that most centrists have abandoned Moon.

Pundits said a land speculation scandal involving public officials and the opposition camps fielding a single candidate in the April 7 mayoral by-elections appear to have swayed voter sentiment.

Only 34 percent of respondents said Moon is doing a good job while 59 percent said he is not. Support plunged by three percentage points compared to just a week earlier, while the opposition increased four percentage points.

In Seoul, Moon's approval rating stood at just 26 percent, which was barely higher than the 24 percent in the conservative strongholds of Daegu and surrounding North Gyeongsang Province.

In his own hometown of Busan and neighboring Ulsan and South Gyeongsang Province, support was also a humiliating 30 percent. It was also 30 percent in Daejeon and Chungcheong provinces, 36 percent in Incheon and Gyeonggi Province but a stalwart 69 percent in Gwangju and the Jeolla region.
