Yang Hyeon-jong of the Texas Rangers has yet to cement his place in the club's opening day roster after a less-than-convincing pre-season performance.
Making his first start in an exhibition game against the Cincinnati Reds at Goodyear Ballpark in Arizona on Wednesday, Yang allowed two runs off five hits in three and one-third innings. He struck out two with no walks, but his ERA in exhibition games rose from 3.00 to 3.86.
The game was particularly important to Yang, who is aiming for a spot on the opening day roster. He had previously appeared in three games as a reliever. He did not allow a run in the bottom of the first inning but gave up two in the second before leaving the mound in the fourth.
The Rangers won the game 6-5.
Last month, Yang signed a minor league contract with the Rangers, with an invitation to spring training.
