Nongshim raked in over W2 trillion in sales of instant noodles last year, as demand for easy-to-prepare meals has soared amid the coronavirus lockdown (US$1=W1,134).

Its sales of instant noodles amounted to W2.87 trillion in 2020, up 16.3 percent on-year, surpassing the W2 trillion mark for the first time. Global demand grew sharply, as it saw sales rise in the U.S. by 26.5 percent and in China by 28.2 percent.

Even before the coronavirus pandemic, overseas sales of its signature Chapagetti and Neoguri were buoyed after a combination of the two was featured in director Bong Joon-ho's Oscar-winning film "Parasite."

Sales at rivals such as Samyang and Paldo also jumped during the same period.

Samyang posted W591.1 billion in sales of instant noodles and Paldo W297.1 billion, up 20.9 percent and 9.2 percent on-year.
