Some 1.35 million people were officially unemployed in February, and 999,000 of them had become lost their job in the coronavirus epidemic last year, according to Statistics Korea on Wednesday.

The epidemic put a huge dent in the job market, and many of the victims have still not been able to find jobs again.

A majority of 60.6 percent of the unemployed had been looking for work for less than three months, while 10.3 percent had been without a job for more than six months.

Another 281,000 had been without a job for more than a year as of February, up 33,000 from a year earlier.

Small businesses were hit especially hard, causing widespread job losses. Some 59,000 more people in their 50s lost their jobs over the last year, and 60,000 over-60s.

Job losses were slower among people in their 30s (17,000) and 40s (8,000).
