Strawberries have overtaken daily necessities like pork and milk in sales as Koreans are desperate for little treats in dismal times.
The succulent red gems were the second most-sold product after instant noodles during the period between December and January, according to E-Mart.
The superstore sold more than W30 billion worth of strawberries this winter, and they topped E-Mart's list of all 30-odd fruits in terms of sales, overtaking second-ranked tangerines and third-ranked grapes combined (US$1=W1,112).
Strawberries are surprisingly versatile and can be used for anything from baking to making juice and smoothies. One reason for the high demand may be that a lot of people took up home-based hobbies like baking in lockdown.
More importantly, though, strawberries are highly photogenic and look great on Instagram.
An Instagram search shows 2.63 million posts with the hashtag #strawberries and 670,000 for #strawberry cakes.
