North Korea staged a military parade in the middle of a freezing cold night during a weeklong Workers Party congress.

"North Korea staged a military parade at dead of night on Sunday in Kim Il-sung Square in Pyongyang," the Joint Chiefs of Staff here said in a press release on Monday.

"South Korean and U.S. military authorities are analyzing the data, but it is possible that the activity was a rehearsal," it added.

North Korea's new intercontinental ballistic missile is displayed during a military parade marking the 75th anniversary of the Workers Party in Pyongyang, in this file photo from last year.

Temperatures dropped to -16 degrees Celsius in Pyongyang on Sunday night, or even colder counting the wind-chill factor.

A government official here said, "It seems Pyongyang wanted to demonstrate its tightened control over the country despite the coronavirus epidemic and the cold weather."

The organizers might also have wanted to maximize the light effects after first experimenting with a nighttime parade last October to mark the 75th anniversary of the military.
