Footballer Suk Hyun-jun, who plays for ESTAC Troyes in France's Ligue 2, has been charged with draft dodging here.
The Military Manpower Administration on Thursday revealed the names of 256 draft dodgers for last year, and Suk is accused of failing to return to Korea by April 1, 2019, the deadline of his deferment.
All Korean men between 18 and 28 must serve in the military for at least a year and six months.
Those who have not completed their mandatory military service are required to return to Korea when they turn 28 or need special authorization from the MMA to travel abroad until they are 30.
The MMA said it notified the footballer of the violation in March this year and gave him six months to provide an explanation, but none came.
Suk could serve between one and five years in prison if he is found guilty of deliberately avoiding the draft by staying overseas.
