The government's scheme to boost employment has resulted in the number of menial jobs increasing, mostly for the elderly, while opportunities for young jobseekers are scant. The coronavirus epidemic has made things even more difficult for the young.
According to Statistics Korea on Wednesday, the number of employed people aged 60 and above increased by 372,000 in November from a year earlier. It has been growing since March.
This year, some 740,000 jobs created by the government, or eight out of 10, went to the elderly, according to the Ministry of Employment and Labor's own figures. And another 785,000 jobs will be made available to the elderly next year.
Prof. Kim Tae-ki of Dankook University said, "The government must work on ways to improve the overall job market instead of simply increasing the kind of menial sinecures that are most suitable for the elderly."
