An alarming 583 new cases were added to Korea's daily tally of coronavirus infections on Thursday morning, rising above 500 for the first time since March.

The surge has been anticipated as more than 300 new cases were reported every day for the last eight day except Sunday, when fewer people were tested.

The number of new cases is likely to increase since infections occurred among a variety of groups across the country. Some 336 people already tested positive for coronavirus in the capital region alone on Wednesday, according to the Seoul Metropolitan Government.

Many group infections have occurred in churches, private crammers and military units. According to health authorities over 100 churchgoers in Seoul tested positive, as did at least 48 people at an aerobics gym.

Some 1,000 officers, soldiers and recruits are being tested at a military unit in Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi Province after 55 conscripts tested positive there.

A fisherman tested positive on Ulleung Island after he arrived from Jeju Island on Tuesday to catch fish and complained of a cough and chills, the first case on the remote island.

The central government said it will "watch the situation by maintaining the current alert level." Lockdown rules were already tightened early this week. Experts are at loggerheads over the economic effects of a surge in infections versus an even harsher lockdown, which would be immensely unpopular.
