President Moon Jae-in on Monday nominated seasoned four-term Minjoo Party lawmaker Kang Chang-il as new ambassador to Japan.
Kang is an expert on Japanese affairs. He has a Ph.D from the University of Tokyo and has previously led the Korea-Japan Parliamentarians' Union. This is the first time that Moon has appointed a politician as ambassador to Japan.
Cheong Wa Dae said it hopes that Kang's expertise and extensive network of high-level Japanese officials can help set the stage for a forward-looking relationship with Tokyo.
