Health authorities are on the alert as many parties are already booked at bars and nightclubs across the country for the Halloween weekend.

Health authorities fear a repeat of the surge of infections in May in Seoul's popular party district of Itaewon.

Police will be mobilized in Seoul and other cities to check until the weekend if bars and nightclubs comply strictly with quarantine regulations -- wearing masks, installing digital customer registers, and keeping a safe distance between customers.

"We'll keep a close watch on Incheon, Gyeonggi Province and Busan, which have the most nightclubs after Seoul," a police spokesman said Wednesday.

In Seoul, three teams of 80 police officers will patrol nightlife districts like Gangnam, Itaewon, and the Hongik University area on Friday and Saturday.

Seoul city officials had inspected a total of 2,698 bars and nightclubs in the city until Oct. 24 and ordered 20 of them to close for violating quarantine rules. They will also crack down on entertainment facilities this Halloween weekend.

The Busan city government will also order bars and clubs to close for seven days if they violate quarantine regulations.

When the crackdown was announced, many clubs in Seoul's Itaewon and Gangnam decided to close voluntarily this weekend.
