Thirty-six men in an artillery unit in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province have tested positive for coronavirus.
The infections occurred even though all soldiers had been put into full lockdown for 51 days.
According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency on Monday, three servicemen at the unit of the 5th Artillery Brigade in Pocheon tested positive on Sunday.
That led to testing of all 240 officers and artillerymen in the unit, and another 33 tested positive. Three of them are officers.
On Aug. 16, the Defense Ministry issued a curfew for all troops in the capital region and extended it nationwide three days later.
Military and health authorities are trying to track the sources of the infection, but so far to no avail. However, they discovered that one infected officer had visited Seoul on Sept. 26-27 and are now focusing on trying to find out where he went during that time.
Meanwhile, 75 new cases were reported as of Tuesday morning, bringing the cumulative number to 24,239.
