Over 120 coronavirus patients in Korea are in critical condition.
The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said 124 patients were in critical condition as of Wednesday morning, while the number of new infections rose by 267 to a cumulative total of 20,449.
That was a decline from a peak of 441 new cases on Aug. 26 but still too high, especially since nearly one-third of infections are occurring among the vulnerable elderly.
Cases where the route of transmission cannot be traced account for a record 24.3 percent of new infections.
In February and March when Korea saw the highest number of daily infections mostly in Daegu, patients over 60 accounted for only 14 percent.
Kwon Jun-wook, the deputy chief of the KCDC, said, "There is a strong possibility of the number of critical cases rising further until this weekend, and deaths could also increase."
So far 326 deaths have been linked to the virus.
In Seoul alone, cumulative infections have reached 4,062, just one week after surpassing 3,000.
