The U.S. State Department on Monday named a new envoy for defense cost-sharing negotiations with Korea and other nations.
Donna Welton, the former assistant chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy in Afghanistan, is the new chief negotiator to succeed James DeHart, who was recently shunted to coordinator for the Arctic region.
As a diplomat, Welton has over 25 years of experience and has worked in countries including Finland and Indonesia and the U.S. mission to the UN.
The personnel shift comes amid renewed speculation that U.S. President Donald Trump may threaten to pull troops out of Korea if he does not get enough money.
