Han So-hee added a new twist to the role of the adulteress in the popular JTBC TV series "The World of the Married," a remake of the BBC hit "Doctor Foster," which has drawn legions of fans.
Usually actresses who play adulteresses have been unpopular with Korean TV viewers, but Han's sophisticated looks and confident attitude captured their hearts.
The drama, which ended in May, scored rave reviews for its detailed depiction of the marriages of middle-aged couples. It shows how easily the strong bond that held a married couple together can crumble.
But another key to the series' success was how it portrayed the adulteress. Han's character did not care what others thought of her and confidently followed her heart.
As in all popular entertainment, her misdeeds eventually caught up with her, but Han left indelible impression with her acting chops and dazzling looks.
Han debuted in the 2017 TV drama "Reunited Worlds" after a stint of modeling and appearing in music videos. She is now one of the most sought-after stars in Korea and the darling of advertisers for anything from detergents, beverages and sportswear.
But the actress attributes her appeal to her background. She traveled to Seoul pretty much with just the clothes on her back and held numerous part-time jobs in a jewelry shop, clothing store, barbecue restaurant, pub and toy store to make ends meet. She says she realized only after working by chance as a model that she could actually make a living by doing what she enjoys.
"I'm really busy and it's hard work, but I'm not complaining," she says. "I may be physically tired, but I feel like I'm on an adrenaline rush. Mentally, I'm not tired at all."
She also knows better than to let her fame go to her head. "What goes up must come down, and I want to minimize that shock by being recognized for my acting skills," She says. "I want to do this for a long time. I hope I can rise slowly and last longer that way."
