Record Rains Drench Gangneung

    A local storm drenched Gangneung in Gangwon Province on Tuesday in 247.2 mm of rain as gusts of up to 110 km/h pounded the eastern coastal city even though there was no typhoon passing by.

    According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the downpours were the most severe for the city for June in the 110 years since records began. The previous record for the month was set in 1953 with 160.4 mm.

    The KMA said 100 to 160 mm of rain fell on eastern and southern coastal regions and Jeju Island from Monday to Tuesday. More than 250 mm of rain fell in the mountainous highland region of Jeju.

    Seoul and surrounding Gyeonggi Province also saw heavy downpours on Tuesday with precipitations of 50-100 mm.

    The KMA said the rains will return mainly in southern parts around Sunday.
