The number of coronavirus patients over 60 years old has increased more than 10-fold over the past four weeks, and the rate of untraceable cases has risen from seven to nine percent, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Sunday.

The number of patients over 60 jumped from 13 in the May 17-23 period to 134 between June 7 and 13. The ratio of the elderly to all new patients soared from 10.2 to 40.4 percent.

The number of patients over 80, whose infections could be fatal, increased from one to 23. The proportion of patients whose sources of infection are untraceable rose slightly over the period.

On Sunday, 34 people tested positive, slightly down from 56 on Friday and 49 on Saturday. Thirty of the new infections occurred in the capital region. It is possible that the number decreased because fewer tests were conducted over the weekend.

On Saturday, the number of patients over 80 jumped by 10 as a result of infections at a daycare center for the elderly in Seoul's Dobong district. Eleven new cases occurred among door-to-door salespeople at Richway, a health product retailer in Seoul, bringing the total there to 164.

Meanwhile Korea reported another 37 new cases as of Monday morning, 25 of them in the Seoul metropolitan area, bringing the total to 12,121.
