The number of moviegoers hit a two-month high on Saturday, a sign that the film industry may be finally on its way to recovery from the coronavirus crisis.
The Korean Film Council said on Sunday that 165,500 people attended movie cinemas on the previous day, Memorial Day, the highest since the number plunged to some 15,000 a day on average in April at the height of the epidemic.
In early May, moviegoers started to return to theaters as the epidemic showed signs of slowing down, with their numbers surpassing 100,000 a day for the first time since March 14. But that was soon scuppered by a resurgence of the virus traced to the party district of Itaewon in Seoul.
