The number of flight passengers surpassed 2 million last month, after plunging to the 1 million level in March and April amid the coronavirus outbreak. But that is still a mere 20 percent of their number in May last year.
The Korea Civil Aviation Association on Monday said 2.03 million passengers took domestic and international flights in May, up 49 percent from 1.35 million in April. Their number had plummeted from 10.63 million in January to 5.51 million in February and 1.74 million in March.
Most of the passengers or 1.88 million were domestic passengers.
The surge was attributed to the long weekend early in the month, when many tourists visited Jeju Island as a slowdown of the epidemic eased lockdowns and the economy slowly started to return to normal.
But an industry insider said, "The crisis for the aviation industry will continue for a considerable period unless passenger numbers on international flights rebound and recover the usual average of 10 million a month."
