The latest coronavirus resurgence has spread to the heavily populated metropolitan areas of Incheon, Bucheon and Goyang.

If the infections spread to the capital itself, where 7.3 million people commute every day, the damage could be catastrophic.

Some 64 out of 90 confirmed infections traced to Coupang warehouse workers were detected in Incheon and Bucheon, Gyeonggi Province. Infections are also being found in Paju and other cities in Gyeonggi Province.

Goyang, Bucheon and Incheon are largely dormitory cities feeding commuters into Seoul every day, so health authorities are bracing for a surge in infections in the capital as the virus spreads quietly on public transportation.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport last year found that 7.3 million commuters use buses and subways in the capital region every day. Commuter traffic is particularly heavy in Incheon and Bucheon due to their proximity to Seoul.
