Former Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Kang Jung-ho is seeking to return to the Korean baseball league after he was released from the Major League team last year.

The Korea Baseball Organization said Thursday that Kang asked to be reinstated from the "voluntary retired" list he was put on when he left the Kiwoom Heroes (formerly Nexen Heroes) to join the Pirates in 2015.

But he will first have to pay a heavy penalty due to his three drunk driving convictions. The KBO will hold a disciplinary meeting to discuss his case.

Kang was caught driving under the influence in Seoul in December 2016 and given a two-year suspended sentence. He had two other prior convictions for drunk driving from 2009 and 2011.

Under the KBO's rules, a player who has been arrested for drunk driving three times or more is subject to a minimum three-year suspension.
