Cases of infections traced to the notorious clubs and bars of Itaewon had risen to at least 101 as of Tuesday morning.

According to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 23 confirmed patients are family members and friends of people who visited clubs in the area.

Asymptomatic infections among those already tested are as high as one in three, spreading the virus unknowingly to their families and others.

A former chief of the KCDC Jeon Byung-yul said, "This could trigger a resurgence of the coronavirus since young men use public transportation almost every day and tend to be more active in general."

Most of the new patients are under the age of 30.
