Schools are staying closed for another week after a fresh surge in coronavirus infections traced to nightclubs and bars in Seoul's Itaewon district.
The Education Ministry made the announcement on Monday. High school seniors were supposed to go back to school on Wednesday but will now have to stay home another week.
Next will come children in first and second grade of elementary school, and ninth and 11th graders as well as kindergartners on May 27. The rest will follow over the coming weeks.
But the ministry said the postponement will not lead to any further delay in this year's college entrance exam already rescheduled for early December.
But the opening schedule could be readjusted once again depending on an investigation of fresh infections linked to Itaewon clubs, the ministry added
The new wave of infections related to the entertainment area soared to 101 as of Tuesday, according to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
