Only two new coronavirus cases were reported on Tuesday, the lowest number in 78 days since infections spiked in Daegu, bringing the total to 10,806.
The previous day there were only three new infections, and all five had arrived from overseas while no infections have been reported within the country for three consecutive days.
The good news came a day before the lockdown is being eased.
The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that social distancing seems to have paid off but will keep the alert level at red level for the time being.
But some of the new infections appear to have come from unknown transmission paths, and health authorities are investigating. They said that to minimize a risk of another surge of infections, the percentage of unknown transmissions should be below five percent.
Over the last two weeks, the sources of eight new infections were unclear, which accounts for 6.3 percent of the total 127 during the period.
