The coronavirus epidemic has reduced the numbers of intrepid moviegoers to around 15,000 a day.

According to the Korean Film Council, 15,726 people went to theaters nationwide on Monday, the fewest on record.

There are 560 movie theaters in Korea, so that averages out at 28 people each distributed across several screens.

As the releases of new films including Hollywood blockbusters has been postponed indefinitely, re-releases of old movies have become the top-ranked films at the box office, such as they are.

The government earlier this month temporarily waived taxes for theaters and offered funding to promote new films. But movie industry insiders say that is not enough.

They called on the government earlier this month to come up with special measures to support the film industry and lower loan requirements for theater operators to help them stay afloat.
